LEXINGTON- The boys in blue were back in Kentucky Proud Park Thursday night for their final home series of the regular season. Their opponent? Well that would be the Vanderbilt Commodores, the usual Southeastern Conference juggernaut that has struggled to a 34-18 record in 2024. The SEC Regular Season Crown is on the line this weekend in Lexington, as Kentucky could clinch it for the first time since 2006 with a series victory.
The University of Kentucky installed bleachers in Left Filed in anticipation of large crowds not only for this series, but for a home post-season run as well. Kentucky was projected by D1 Baseball this past week to hold the top-overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and host their Road to Omaha.
Trey Pooser got the start for the Bat Cats, the Right-handed Senior held a 4.10 ERA entering Thursday’s contest. He would be faced with every Pitcher’s worst nightmare, a first pitch Home Run belted over Center by a non-Homerun hitting team to immediately put his team down 1-0.
The Bats were warm for Mingione’s Bat Cats, as they exploded offensively for NINE runs over the course of the next Five Innings. This team thrives in adverse situations, and it was apparent to everyone watching that superior mental strength is also an asset for the #2 ranked Wildcats.
No one asked me, but I believe a short term memory is key to successfully traveled road to Omaha and the College World Series.
Nick Lopez would provide non-needed insurance with his own “Big Blue Bomb” in the Eighth Inning, widening the gap to five, a lead Kentucky would never relinquish.
Kentucky takes game one-of-three against the ‘Dores.
This victory was extra special for Kentucky, as it was a program-record setting 21st SEC win for the season. They will have two more opportunities to add to that total, next being tomorrow night when they return to Kentucky Proud Park for Game Two of the Three-game series.
