Kentucky vs Southern Miss: The Five Takeaways

@CoachRyanKY

LEXINGTON — Rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of the Wildcats faithful as Kentucky kicked off its 2024 season on Saturday night. Originally slated for a 7:55 p.m. ET start, the game did not commence until just after 10 p.m. While much has been discussed about the intricacies of the game, here are my five key takeaways:

1. Brock Vandagriff’s Toughness: A Double-Edged Sword?

Brock Vandagriff started the game demonstrating his scrambling prowess, living up to the quote from SEC Media Days that “Brock don’t slide.” The Big Blue Nation witnessed firsthand the truth of this statement from his former University of Georgia teammate. However, there is a concern here, reminiscent of Will Levis’s experience in 2022. Levis, known for his aggressive play in 2021, was hampered by injuries the following year, which significantly impacted his performance. Vandagriff displayed essential qualities like leadership, a sharp throwing motion, and quick decision-making. The question remains, though: can he maintain his health while facing the hits from SEC defenses?

2. Barion Brown: A Rising Star

Barion Brown admitted he hadn’t taken football as seriously as he should have during his initial years at the University of Kentucky. Now, his speed is a game-changer—give him an inch, and he’s gone. It was clear from the opening pooch kick that Southern Miss had done their homework, aiming to keep the ball as far away from him as possible.

3. The New Lights at Kroger Field: A Shining Addition

Though it wasn’t my money, if I were Mitch Barnhart, I’d consider the new lights at Kroger Field a fantastic upgrade. I recall the days at the old Commonwealth Stadium, where the sound system was out of sync, and warm-ups were filled with static-laden music (though I must admit, the Marcus McClinton “Believe” rap was delightful). The new lights made their debut during the weather delay, eliciting cheers from an increasingly impatient crowd. It was a smart move by UK to unveil them early, and I look forward to seeing them light up the rest of the season—quite literally.

4. Concerns About the Offensive Line

“The Big Blue Wall” might need to switch its focus from offense to defense this season. While Kentucky’s defensive line impressed, the offensive line left much to be desired. Vandagriff found himself scrambling far more than he should have against what should have been an outmatched Sun Belt opponent. Whether this was just first-game jitters remains to be seen, but there were clear issues with communication and, more worryingly, execution. Southern Miss defenders were able to penetrate the line too easily, which could spell trouble for the Wildcats’ offense this season.

5. The Best Fans in College Sports

The Big Blue Nation filled the parking lots around Kroger Field early on Saturday, creating an electric tailgating atmosphere. One particularly dedicated fan mentioned starting his day with beer at 6:30 a.m. and not stopping since (a reminder to always drink responsibly). Despite the weather delay, the enthusiasm of the fans never wavered. There’s something about enduring hardship together that builds camaraderie. Those present at Kroger Field on Saturday will likely remember this game not just for the 31-0 victory, but for the experience as a whole.
